Session Overview:
Delirium is a common yet complex syndrome, and older people are the most susceptible to it.  It is considered a serious condition and can often lead to poor outcomes and in some instances death. The incidence of delirium in Australian hospitals is significant. It can affect up to 50 % of older people in certain hospital setting but it is often not reported or diagnosed during the hospital admission.

The key aspect to delirium management is diagnosis and the rectification of known reversal causes which are often multifactorial. Care may include both non- pharmacological and pharmacological interventions. Managing several emotional and behavioural disturbances is also a significant component in providing optimal care of a patient experiencing delirium.

Meet our Presenters:


Sarah Potter
Sarah has a Masters of Clinical Rehabilitation and is the Chair of the Delirium and Cognition sub-committee at Albury Wodonga Health.  Last year she completed a 12-month project on improving delirium care on the Acute Ward at Wodonga campus, through Safer Care Victoria.  The project work is now being scaled to include other clinical areas at Albury Wodonga Health.  Outside of work, Sarah enjoys crocheting, heavy metal and Crossfit.


Anne Duncan

After spending many years working in perioperative nursing as a clinical nurse, educator and in academia, Anne made a career change to the community rehabilitation space. This coincided with a move from Melbourne to the North East. Last year she commenced Nurse Practitioner studies focussing on the older person as her specialty area. She currently works at Albury Wodonga Health across sub-acute, acute, CDAMS and community. Anne has a particular interest in cognition, delirium management and improving the experience of older people in hospital.
