Delirium & Managing Challenging Behaviours

Session Overview:
Delirium is a common yet complex syndrome, and older people are the most susceptible to it.  It is considered a serious condition and can often lead to poor outcomes and in some instances death. The incidence of delirium in Australian hospitals is significant. It can affect up to 50 % of older people in certain hospital setting but it is often not reported or diagnosed during the hospital admission.

The key aspect to delirium management is diagnosis and the rectification of known reversal causes which are often multifactorial. Care may include both non- pharmacological and pharmacological interventions. Managing several emotional and behavioural disturbances is also a significant component in providing optimal care of a patient experiencing delirium.
What will be covered:
  • Define delirium
  • Complications of delirium
  • Identifying behaviours of concern
  • How to manage behaviours of concern
